I need opinions/suggestions on how I should spend my American holiday. Should I get a bus pass and sleep on the bus at night and explore wherever I end up during the day, or should I just pick a couple of cities and stay there for a few weeks each? Or is there a better idea I haven't thought of?
Also, if I do go with the bus option, anyone want me to pay their home town a visit?

I think the bus pass would be a pretty cool idea if you planned out where you would stop. Do you know when you'll be going?

I completed a similar trip 12 months ago and would recommend you exercise caution, sometimes the cheapest option is fine but alot of the time it can be quite confronting.
Edit : Sorry just to clarify, this type of trip is confronting if travelling alone. |

June 16-Aug 20. And I kinda prefer not to plan. I've always found the best places by pure chance.
What, exactly do you mean by confronting? |

Honestly it depends where in the world you come from but I live in Australia and I don't mean to scare you off but based on my experiences of busing it around the us you might encounter vagrants and the like and you should understand that based on the size of the us you can travel in the day for roughly and same price for alot safer option. Again its an individual thing but this is my opinion.
Edit: One more time, as much as I may seem to advise against certain options everything I advise on I have tried and tested and more importantly survived myself. |

Oh wow! You're here for awhile. You should check out Lancaster, Pa. There are a lot of Amish that live in that area and it's pretty cool to see how people can live without electricity and ride around in horse and buggys.
There's a place that i've always wanted to visit but have never gotten around to it (sad part is, I live less than an hour away.) It's called Fallingwater. It's a house that was built with water flowing through it. http://fallingwater.org/ There's also caves if you would like to go spelunking.

aah. I'm from the same place Kyle. Thanks for the warning. I kind of suspected something like that, but it's always better to hear it confirmed.
If a bus goes there, sure. I'll check them both out. And I've already been to a house with running water going through it In Egypt though so it was more of a hut, but it sounds like a fun place to see.

about hour 2
But I'll put some serious effort into it. That sounds like fun.and yes it does but this is in the middle of the desert, they pumped water through the middle of the hut. it looks good and feels sooooo good.I seem to have a consensus from everyone who commented on the whole bus v hostel idea. And I'm going to purchase my ticket tomorrow. I would do it tonight but I made a dozen typos in this little bit, and would rather avoid one on the booking form. Thanks for your input everyone. I'll try to keep you posted as I travel, but I won't be around nearly as much as I am now. |

Totally. Meeting heaps of the awesome peoples of America... and some of the not-so-awesomes... but having bucketloads of fun just randomly wandering around on the Greyhound buses wherever fate and whimsy deign for me to go.
