This is a piece I wrote at a critical point two weeks ago: I was strained from doing too much poetry, aiming to enter a writing contest, and I spilled everything out on paper and decided to hand it in this, Blackbird and another piece were entered in the contest.
Here it is:

Across the ocean blue
Forward from hidden spires
Beneath an azure sky
Zephyr of the times
Song of silver flames
Whispering breezes linger
Shielded from the ages
Lay rhymes of golden dew

Murmurs at the dawning
Of a past we now create
Forgotten by the call
Of the poetry we hate

Up through darkened waters
Across the river deep
Amongst the tethered words
You may find what you seek
Now hope arise anew
Untouched by human hands
Syllables free of rhymes
Race wild across the lands

Anarchy has prevailed!
Now poetry may breathe
Take a step, take a leap
At a world of possibilities

Losing count, lost control
Of all those words held inside
Fresh, heartfelt, ever bold
They gallop, they fly, spreading wings
Power sleek, beauty old
Graceful, light, upon the breeze
The seven wonders may sleep at ease
As the rhyming world now flies

Forget the form
Forget the sound
Poetry is made to sing
Poetry is made to dance
Poetry is made to live.

I thought that was one of my worst works (a real joke) but it seems the teachers were of the same mind as you:
I won first place in the poetry section o.O
